Nature & Outdoor Adventures Around Campus
San Marcos is one of the easiest college towns in Texas for getting outside. Spring-fed water, riverside parks, trails, and nature-focused attractions are all close to Texas State.
A standout is Spring Lake at The Meadows Center for Water & the Environment. Visitors can learn about the springs and local ecosystem through experiences such as glass-bottom boat tours and other guided programs.
Closer to the center of town, Sewell Park and Rio Vista Park are popular places to spend time along the San Marcos River. Depending on conditions and season, people use the river for swimming, paddling, tubing, picnics, and relaxing by the water.
If you prefer walking or wildlife watching, check current access before exploring the Spring Lake area. The Meadows Center currently lists its Wetlands Boardwalk as temporarily closed for repairs; check the Meadows Center website for reopening updates. Texas Parks & Wildlife also maintains information about the San Marcos-area wildlife trail.
River conditions, park rules, tour availability, and seasonal activities can change, so check the relevant park or attraction before heading out. You can also browse our Activities near Texas State directory for more outdoor ideas.
Choose a trailhead for a land-based outing
Purgatory Creek Natural Area
Purgatory Creek has a lower trailhead at 2102 Hunter Road and an upper trailhead at 1753 Valencia Way. The city describes the lower trails as rocky, natural-surface routes used by trail runners and mountain bikers. An accessible trail starts from Upper Purgatory; that does not make the entire trail network accessible.
Ringtail Ridge Natural Area
Ringtail Ridge, at 1818 Old Ranch Road 12, offers trails around wet-weather ponds and a beginner mountain-bike route. It is an option for birdwatching or a shorter nature outing. Check the city’s trail information to choose a route suited to your group.
Spring Lake Natural Area
The city’s Spring Lake Natural Area has trailheads at 685 Lime Kiln Road, 1414 North LBJ Drive, and 215 San Marcos Springs Drive. This trail network is a separate destination from the Meadows Center’s boat tours. Certain hillside trails close from March through May for nesting birds; follow posted restrictions and current trail notices.
